THE SEVEN SACRAMENTS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ARE RECEIVED AS GIFTS FROM JESUS CHRIST TO DEEPEN OUR FRIENDSHIP WITH HIM AND TO AID OUR CHRISTIAN JOURNEY INTO THE FULLNESS OF ETERNAL LIFE AT CRUCIAL MOMENTS. SACRAMENTS ARE FOR FULL MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH. WE ARE EXCITED TO EXPLORE THESE GRACES WITH YOU
Baptism
Baptism is the sacramental gateway to life in Christ and incorporation into His family the Church. Baptism for KU students and other adults is through the OCIA Program. Parents or godparents wishing to present infants or children for baptism can find more info here, and requests can be made through this form.
Reconciliation
Reconciliation or Confession restores our relationship to Christ and the Church through the intimate experience of his mercy. The sacrament is widely available at St. Lawrence. Here is a guide if you’re exploring the sacrament or it’s been awhile. Non-Catholics KU Students and other adults can prepare to receive this sacrament through the OCIA Program. Parents wishing to present children for 1st Confession can find more info here.
1st Communion
The sacrament of the Eucharist completes and feeds one’s Christian life, uniting us most intimately with Jesus through the reception of His Body and Blood. It is the source and the summit of the Catholic Christian life, meaning everything that the Church has received, believes and desires flows in and out of this Most Blessed Sacrament. Eucharist is received for the first time by KU students and other adults through the OCIA Program. Parents wishing to present children for 1st Communion can find more info here and requests can be made through this form.
Confirmation
Confirmation is the strengthening and sealing of the Christian life through the seven-fold gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is often sought by KU Students who wish their Christian baptism to be confirmed in the Catholic Church or by KU Students who have missed the reception of this sacrament for various reasons. KU students and other adults can seek this sacrament through the OCIA Program. Parents and Sponsors wishing to present children or adolescents for Confirmation can find more info here, and requests can be made through this form.
Marriage
The sacrament of marriage between a man and a woman participates in the eternal covenant between God and His People, Christ and His Bride the Church. A man and woman endeavor through vows to be joined by the Holy Spirit and transformed from two people into one flesh. St. Lawrence both celebrates Roman Catholic weddings and prepares couples for marriage elsewhere. There’s lots to know. The process starts with a personal appointment with Fr. Luke (frluke@kucatholic.org). By the way, if you’re engaged - congratulations!
Holy Orders
Holy Orders is the sacrament of service by which a man called by Jesus is configured through ordination to Him as Head and Shepherd of the Church. St. Lawrence has a blessed history of discernment of Priesthood and Consecrated Life. Celibate men are encouraged to discern the priesthood. This is done at St. Lawrence through our in-residence vocation director, Fr. Dan Morris (frdan@kucatholic.org), and through spiritual direction, prayer, and discernment retreats/groups.
While not a sacrament, discernment of consecrated life by chaste men and women is also greatly encouraged. Please contact a priest through our staff page who can guide you.
Anointing of the Sick
The anointing of the sick facilitates healing of soul, mind and body. The sacrament is recommended for anyone who is gravely ill or facing serious surgery. It may also be requested by those facing a new, serious or ambiguous diagnosis. Last Rites (Confession, Anointing, Eucharist, Apostolic Pardon) are received by those facing certain or imminent death. The sacrament can be requested from the sacristy after any daily Mass, or can be scheduled or requested on an emergency basis by texting (785) 383-8396.
