11/10/19 What does it mean to live?

What does it mean to live?

Life. What is it? We can all tell when it’s gone, when something dies, but what does it really mean to live; or to live well? Life, we’re told by our secular and materialist culture, is simply chemicals bouncing around in our bodies that we have to gather and hold on to for as long as possible.

How often am I tempted to buy this line!  How often am I tempted to measure success or “living life well” only in physical terms, equating life with health, possessions, or one’s bank account.

I believe that God knows me, that he loves me and has given me everything I have. Yet how hard it is to break free from the culture’s prison that holds my thoughts captive.  Jesus today invites us to recognize that life is more than just hydrogen and carbon molecules or our bank account, but about holding a child’s hand, about visiting the lonely, about caring for those in need: it’s about growing in love and helping others.

Jesus invites us to true life; to a life that imitates the life of the Trinity, a life of relationship and love.
