Guest Fr. Jaime Zarse about Christ the King

What power do you have?

My most recent reflections on power have been informed by watching the movie “The Incredibles” with my three toddler boys. In this movie, Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) and his family, use their super powers to save the “normals” from all evil. Sadly, our current culture doesn’t have Mr. Incredible. Instead, power wields itself in politics, career aspirations, and individual success.

But in this week’s Gospels we see Jesus, the most powerful human that has ever walked this earth, demonstrate His power through humility. As He hangs on the cross, we see Him choose joy in the suffering.

By receiving our Lord and Savior in the Eucharist, each of us has the capacity to reclaim real power in our own lives. The power to heal. The power to speak Truth. The power to be humble. The power to live joyfully. The power to give grace. The power to love.

For me, my super power is fully embracing the call that God has placed on my heart, to be a wife to my husband and mom to my children. It means daily choosing peace in the chaos, remaining joyful in unexpected interruptions, and serving my family, neighbors and friends. It may not be Mr. Incredible, but it’s a start.
